This is a large-scale bronze cast after Frederic Remington's "The Buffalo Signal," first modeled in 1902. A Plains warrior sits astride his rearing horse and raises a buffalo hide high overhead, signaling the success of the hunt. The horse strains forward with flowing mane and tail from a naturalistic rocky ground base. The bronze has a rich dark brown patina and is mounted on an oval green-black variegated marble plinth. The original has a remarkable history. Remington created it as a gift for young French Devereux, whose family had befriended him on a trip west, and reportedly broke the mold so that it would remain one of a kind. That unique original was later acquired by the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, so every example on the market today is a later casting. This is a later reproduction casting and is not represented as a lifetime Remington bronze. The lot includes a display pedestal for a dramatic presentation. Please see photos for condition. Dimensions: Sculpture: 24" L (front to back) x 7" W Height: 36" with marble plinth; 34.5" bronze alone Marble plinth: 21" L x 10" W x 1.5" H Pedestal: 20" x 12" x 48" H Overall display height: 84" with pedestal
