This medal commemorates the Cuban War of Independence of 1895–1898, reading "GUERRA DE INDEPENDENCIA DE CUBA" arched around a maroon enamel border with the years "1895–1898" at the base, encircling a raised gilt depiction of the Cuban coat of arms — the sunrise-over-key shield, striped field, and palm landscape — surrounded by a full laurel wreath and topped with the Phrygian liberty cap. This style of veteran commemorative badge was issued to mark service or recognition tied to Cuba's independence struggle, the conflict that culminated in the Spanish-American War. The reverse is maker-marked, reading "VILARDEBO Y RIERA — HABANA" along with "FTE. ORO" (gold-plated face), tying this piece to the prominent Havana goldsmith house Antigua Vilardebó y Riera, the principal manufacturer of Cuban military decorations through the Republican period, with a gold-plated brass construction rather than solid gold. The reverse mount is a knurled disc with a stud-post, typical of period Cuban badge and medal hardware. The gilt finish shows genuine wear and mellowing with age, and the enamel border remains vivid with only minor loss.
Measures approximately 0.75" x 0.75"
