The International 1456 is a large, heavy-duty farm tractor built from 1969–1971. It’s powered by a turbocharged IH DT407 6-cylinder diesel making around 130 PTO horsepower, designed for serious tillage and field work. The standard tread version like this tractor was favored in the western wheat growing states. The 1456 features a gear transmission with optional Torque Amplifier, 1000-RPM PTO and strong hydraulics. It’s best known for its power, durability, and classic late-1960s IH styling.
This rare International 1456 Golden Demonstrator is a remarkable example of IH power, history, and craftsmanship. The tractor has received a top-tier restoration using automotive-quality paint, along with new tires, seat cushions, and lighting, resulting in a finish that is truly second to none. Fully equipped and running exactly as it should, this 1456 is an exceptional parade, show, or working tractor and a standout addition to any serious International Harvester collection.
This tractor was originally sold by West Plains Implement in Beach, North Dakota (Which was owned by Harry Zachman). Years later Harry traded it back in and sold it as a used tractor to Glen Gerving of Glen Ullin, North Dakota. The Gervings owned it for about 20 years using it on their large grain farm to run an auger before selling it to the Van Wyhes in 2022. The tractor was in excellent shape with only slightly over 4000 hours on it. When we bought it, we had a new head gasket and clutch installed, the TA was also rebuilt.
Originally there was speculation on the authenticity of this tractor because the bottom side of the hood was red. They then checked the serial number which put it roughly 2/3rds of the way through the 1970 production year. Next they verified the black dash and cowling under the steering wheel and then found gold paint under the other pieces of sheet metal. With all of that evidence they could verify that it is in fact a true golden demonstrator. The assumption was that the large section of the hood was damaged and replaced at some time in its life.
The tractor runs, drives, and operates as it should. Tractor is equipped with a swinging drawbar, 540 and 1000 PTO with proper shield, two hydraulic remotes, wheatland fenders, lights, hazard lights, chrome grille insert, chrome throttle and shift levers, front mounted suitcase weight bracket, and steps. Sheet metal is straight. Rear tires are 24.5-32 Firestones and front tires are 14L-16.1SL Alliances. Tires are in great condition. Restored by Josh Olson in 2025 with chrome and/or stainless steel bolts throughout sheet metal, wheels, and fenders.
