This is "Jug Band" by celebrated Mississippi-born artist William Tolliver, one of his signature Southern music scenes. A group of musicians plays in a rustic, lamp-lit room: a mandolin player and two guitarists on the left, a pianist at an upright in the background, and on the right a seated man blowing into a jug and a figure standing in shadow. Rendered in Tolliver's distinctive scratched, textured style, the figures emerge from a black ground in glowing pastel tones of turquoise, rose, gold, and green. The print is pencil signed "William Tolliver" at lower right, titled "Jug Band" at lower center, and numbered 14/350 at lower left. The low edition number is a nice feature for collectors. Born in 1951 in Vicksburg, Mississippi, Tolliver was the second oldest of 14 children. He was largely self-taught and rose to prominence in the mid-1980s as a regional talent devoted to capturing the landscapes and people of his native Deep South. His work has been exhibited at the Smithsonian, the Contemporary Arts Center of New Orleans, the New Orleans Museum of Art, and the rotunda of the US Senate Building, and he was commissioned to create a poster for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. "Jug Band" is counted among his classic music-themed compositions, alongside "Big Band," "Transcendent of the Blues," and "Pas de Deux." The print is presented under glass in a black lacquer frame with a charcoal outer mat, a green fabric-wrapped inner fillet, and a cream border. Please see photos for condition. Framed size: 53" x 43" (frame dimensions).
