This bold, colorful modernist work on paper shows two stylized market women carrying a stacked basin on their heads. The figures are built from cubist-inspired planes of saturated color (cobalt blue, lime green, violet, vermilion, and ochre), each outlined in heavy black against a checkered gray-and-black background. The work is titled "Market Women" in pencil at lower left. It is signed in pencil at lower right "Niyi Ogundele" and inscribed "Osogbo," which places it within the art tradition of that Nigerian city. Osogbo became a center of artistic activity in the 1960s following the founding of the Mbari Mbayo club, and the movement that grew from its workshops, blending European techniques with Yoruba culture, became known as the Osogbo School of Art. The work is presented under glass in a gilt frame with a gold outer mat and black and cream inner mats. It's a vibrant, eye-catching piece of West African modernism; please see photos for condition Framed size: 22" x 28" (frame dimensions).

Pieces from the collection, photographed in the Ross home
Burgess Auctions is pleased to present the Catherine Ross Trust, an exceptional collection of art, sculpture, decorative objects and fine furnishings. It was gathered over decades and displayed throughout the Ross family's approximately 11,000-square-foot Northside Indianapolis residence.
Catherine Ross was an educator, interior designer, businesswoman and civic leader whose eye for design is evident throughout this diverse collection. Together with her husband, noted Indianapolis cardiologist Dr. Edward Ross, she assembled an eclectic group of objects reflecting a lifetime of travel, collecting and appreciation for art, culture and design.
