This is an original wire mesh shadow sculpture by the celebrated American artist Randy Cooper, titled "Diana." It is a graceful classical female torso in the tradition of antique marble fragments, hand-formed from fine layered steel mesh. Seen head-on, the translucent mesh seems almost to disappear. When lit, it throws a full, softly modeled shadow figure onto the wall behind it, so the shadow becomes a second, fully realized sculpture. Moving the light source or the piece changes the shadow image, which gives the work a living, changing quality. The torso rises on a slender steel rod set into a square weighted metal base, making it ideal for a floor, corner, or niche installation with directional lighting. It is signed and titled by the artist and is in excellent condition. A self-taught sculptor and founder of Cooper Creations, Inc., Cooper pioneered shadow sculpture, shaping figures from wire mesh that light transformed into striking images cast on the wall, and his work sold internationally for more than 25 years. His large-scale wire-mesh sculptures fitted over fossilized skeletons of extinct marine mammals remain on permanent display in the Age of Mammals exhibit at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. Sculpture: 34" x 11" Overall height with stand: 74" Signed and titled by the artist. Condition: Excellent. Due to its height and delicate mesh surface, this lot requires professional packing and shipping or local pickup.
