This is a large vertical color serigraph by Charles Cobelle. It shows a festive town square where an orchestra plays in a pink bandstand, with a conductor, strolling couples in period dress, dancers, a flower cart, café umbrellas, and a horse and rider. Around the square stand storefronts marked "Sand Piper," "Sweet Shop," "Florist," and "Rooms." At top, two musicians with saxophone and mandolin float beside a crescent moon. The palette is pastel pink, sky blue, and lemon yellow over Cobelle's open-line drawing. It is signed "Cobelle" in pencil at lower right and numbered 279/500 in pencil at lower left. It is presented under glass in a triple mat (light blue, rose, and cobalt) and a white beaded frame. About the artist: Cobelle was born Carl Edelman in Alsace-Lorraine and studied at the University of Munich and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He is often called the last link to the Open Line tradition of the School of Paris. He apprenticed with Raoul Dufy at Menton and also studied with Marc Chagall. After settling in the U.S. he painted murals for Neiman Marcus, the Desert Inn in Las Vegas, and others, and his work is in the Hartford Athenaeum, the Mark Hopkins Hotel, and the private collection of Howard Hughes. Framed size: 27" x 41" (frame dimensions).
