This is a large horizontal color serigraph by Itzchak Tarkay. It shows an outdoor café where two women in patterned shawls sit at a pale blue bistro table with a vase of flowers and coffee cups. Behind them, four more women gather under a scalloped yellow awning near a bar lined with bottles. It has the jewel-tone palette, harlequin diamond patterning, and bold, flattened figures that define Tarkay's best-known work. It is signed "Tarkay" at lower right and numbered 85/350 at lower left, both within the image area. It is presented under glass in a deep green linen-look mat with a green inner fillet and a gold-tone beaded frame. About the artist: Tarkay was born in 1935 in Subotica on the Yugoslav-Hungarian border. At nine he was sent with his family to the Mauthausen concentration camp, and the family survived and emigrated to Israel in 1949. In 1951 he received a scholarship to the Bezalel Art Academy. He became world renowned for his colorful café scenes and bold depictions of women, work often compared to Matisse and Toulouse-Lautrec. Framed size: 44" x 28" (frame dimensions).
