This lot is two mid-20th-century Japanese woodblock prints, each signed Sadanobu III with the artist's seal, and each with the publisher's "UCHIDA" blind stamp embossed in the lower margin. Left, "Shibaraku" : The kabuki hero Kamakura Gongorō Kagemasa in the famous Shibaraku ("Wait a Moment!") role. He wears the enormous persimmon-colored suō robe with square sleeves, bold red kumadori stage makeup, and a white paper topknot ornament, and he draws a long sword against a mica-style speckled gray ground. This is one of the signature roles of the Ichikawa Danjūrō line of actors. Right, "Battle of the Uji River" : The warrior Kajiwara Genta Kagesue in full armor on a rearing black horse with red trappings, carrying a bow and a quiver of arrows, set against a stylized sky of swirling blue-and-white clouds. Both are presented under glass in cream linen mats with red fillets and matching carved dark frames. Date: Shōwa period, c. 1950s-1960s Each framed size: 19" x 28" (frame dimensions).
