This hand-carved hardwood sculpture of a standing hippopotamus has smooth, rounded modeling and a stylized, contemporary feel. The hippo has a broad muzzle, small upright ears, and carved eyes and nostrils. The carving shows off the rich reddish-brown grain of the dense wood, polished to a warm luster. The feet are fitted with felt pads to protect furniture. It's a charming accent for a desk or shelf, or a nice addition to an animal carving collection. It measures approximately 7" long. Condition: There are small lighter spots of finish wear and scuffing on the back and muzzle, along with fine surface scratches and minor hairline checks in the wood, consistent with age and handling. Please see photos for condition.

Pieces from the collection, photographed in the Ross home
Burgess Auctions is pleased to present the Catherine Ross Trust, an exceptional collection of art, sculpture, decorative objects and fine furnishings. It was gathered over decades and displayed throughout the Ross family's approximately 11,000-square-foot Northside Indianapolis residence.
Catherine Ross was an educator, interior designer, businesswoman and civic leader whose eye for design is evident throughout this diverse collection. Together with her husband, noted Indianapolis cardiologist Dr. Edward Ross, she assembled an eclectic group of objects reflecting a lifetime of travel, collecting and appreciation for art, culture and design.
