Large devotional oil painting on wood panel depicting The Death, or Transit, of Saint Joseph. Saint Joseph reclines at center, attended by Christ and the Virgin Mary, with a surrounding host of angels and putti above and around the deathbed.
Rendered in a dark Baroque palette of deep reds, greens and earth tones, with numerous figural details throughout the composition. The subject was widely represented in Spanish and colonial Latin American religious art during the Baroque period.
Unsigned or with no visible artist signature noted. Painted on a multi-board wood panel and housed in a carved and gilt wood frame with foliate corner ornament.
Condition: Extensive age-related craquelure, surface grime and darkened varnish throughout. Scattered abrasions, paint loss and probable areas of old restoration or retouching. Reverse shows multiple wood boards with old repairs/patches and age-related wear. Frame exhibits chips, finish loss, cracking and wear consistent with age. See photographs.
