This gilt wing badge carries genuine rank significance beyond a standard pilot wing: a five-pointed star encircled by a wreath tops the shield, a convention widely used across Latin American and U.S.-influenced military aviation badges to distinguish senior or master-qualified pilots from basic-rated aviators — a star alone typically marks a senior rating, while the added wreath signals the highest qualification tier. Below the star sits a shield rendered in the same diagonal blue-and-white striped field and palm tree motif seen on Cuban national and aviation insignia, and a ribbon banner reading "PRIMERA" — Spanish for "First," likely denoting a first-rank or first-class pilot qualification — spans beneath the full-span, feather-detailed wings. The gilt finish shows genuine wear with dark oxidation across the wings and topper, while the shield's colored fields remain reasonably intact. The reverse retains its original pin-back closure with catch, fully functional, and the badge measures approximately 3 inches wide. A well-documented rank badge from the world of Cuban aviation, its star-and-wreath device and Spanish-language ranking making it a distinctive piece for a collection built around Cuban or Latin American military and civil aviation insignia.
