Both badges share the same central device: a circle enclosing the USAAF/USAF triangle-and-trefoil propeller emblem, the standard center device for all USAAF pilot wings of the WWII era. The smaller badge bears a single five-pointed star above the central device, identifying it as the Senior Pilot wings — awarded to pilots who had accumulated significant flight hours and command experience beyond the basic pilot rating. The larger badge bears a five-pointed star surrounded by a laurel wreath above the central device, identifying it as the Command Pilot wings — the pinnacle of USAAF and early USAF aviation ratings, reserved for the most experienced aviators with extensive command flight time, and among the most prestigious insignia in American military aviation history. Both badges are marked on the reverse "D-22 / 1/20 S/T" — a precious metal content marking indicating silver-topped construction, with silver comprising 1/20th of the total metal weight over a base metal core, a quality construction standard used for military dress insignia of the period.
