A genuinely historic piece of Cuban military aviation — a gold-tone pilot wings badge bearing the Cuban coat of arms in vivid polychrome enamel at center, personally inscribed on the reverse to "General Eulagio Cantillo" with the designation "M.M.N.P.", and retaining its original straight pin-post fastener. This badge belonged to Major General Eulogio Amado Cantillo Porras (September 13, 1911 – September 9, 1978) — one of the most consequential military figures in Cuban history on the eve of the Revolution.
General Cantillo served as Chief of the Army Aviation Corps before being appointed Head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under the Batista government. In May 1958, General Cantillo was given the mission of destroying Castro's guerrilla forces in Operation Verano — commanding nearly the entire Cuban regular army in a massive offensive to surround the Sierra Maestra and crush the 26th of July Movement. The operation ultimately failed, and history turned against the Batista government. After President Batista fled Cuba at 3:00 A.M. on January 1, 1959, Cantillo was left to serve briefly as the de facto Head of State in the early hours of that morning until the official proclamation of an interim president later that day. He was tried by revolutionary tribunals and sentenced to 15 years in prison, was released before completing his sentence, and died in exile in Miami, Florida in 1978.
A wings badge personally inscribed to the man who commanded Cuba's air forces, led the final major offensive against Castro, and stood at the center of one of the most dramatic moments in Cold War history — the fall of Batista's Cuba — is an artifact of extraordinary historical weight. 7. The purchaser agrees to pay all reasonable attorney fees and costs incurred by the auction company in the collection of funds. The purchaser also agrees that a fee of 2% per month is added to the balance of any unpaid balance due the auction company and any other costs or losses incurred by the purchaser's failure to adhere to these terms. Any debt collection or dispute proceedings will be heard in Spartanburg County, South Carolina.
8. The auctioneer has the sole discretion to advance the bidding and may reject a nominal advance, should it in his estimation prove injurious to the auction. The auctioneer shall be the final judge in all bidding disputes and shall name a bidder as the purchaser.
